Large print books have been shown to improve reading skills and comfort with reading, even with students without print and language disabilities. Readers with print disabilities or students that are struggling with reading or reading below grade level have been shown to really benefit from large print books and have been shown to help students like these improve their literacy skills. Students are less likely to lose their place with large print, and it's easier to see the words, increasing their success with reading. I should know, I was one of those students!

I know firsthand that large print books for students with hidden disabilities helps a lot.

Larger print really made a difference in my being able to be successful in school, both in reading and on tests. I didn’t read my first full book until 6th grade when my mom got me a large print copy of Ramona Quimby, Age 8. I was so excited to finish my first book and give a book report like all the other kids in my class!

As part of my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I am working to set up large print book sections in my middle and high school libraries to get these helpful books in the hands of students that may be struggling with reading like I was growing up. We are working to seed this section of books with fun reads that students typically read at the middle and high school levels, but in large print.

The goal of creating large print book sections in schools is to get the students more comfortable with reading who may be reluctant to pick up a book or could use some extra assistance in reading.  Students who are struggling with reading really do want to read like their peers and giving them the resources to be successful increases the chances for them to do that.
